Bessemer Alabama Parking Lot Fiasco Project

So we are down in Bessemer Alabama today with a unique project on our hands. Can y’all believe there is suppose to be asphalt somewhere under this dirt? This is what improperly compacted subgrade does. The asphalt has failed, rolled and allowed the dirt to push up during construction. Jordan and I were brought in to make it right and repair the failed areas. Let’s see what we can do!!

There is asphalt under all that dirt, for whatever unfortunate reason the sub grade failed. We will saw cut and save what asphalt we can, the rest will be dug out and sub grade will be redone and prepped for paving. We didn’t do this project but are glad to help this GC get this fixed so they can open this new hotel in Bessemer!

When in doubt, dig it out…..

So, Update from the parking lot fiasco in Bessemer AL. Things are starting to turn around and progress is being made. It’s took 2 1/2 days to clean off the dirt to see exactly what we were dealing with. Seems as if it was a combination of poor soils that retain moisture and can’t drain, water coming from the adjacent property (now fixed) and poor compaction (due to poor soils). The wheel rutting of the asphalt allowed water to pool and further compromise the subgrade. We undercut some places 3ft to get past the wet nasty dirt that was deflecting and pumping. We then replaced the dirt with 3 to 4” clean stone and then topped it off with 6” of dense grade base limestone. We also got the next section undercut and ready for stone. Check out the pics to see the progress.

Slicking it off and making it shine!!

We got all of the base failures repaired and the paving contractor has his binder course laid. It will look much better when the final wearing surface is put down and it’s striped.

Update Coming Soon……
